Obituary for Earl Dahl
Earl was born on the northwest side of Chicago to Scandinavian parents. His Father Carl who is deceased and his Mother Amy. (deceased) His siblings are his brother Warren and sister Doris. (Both deceased)
He joined the Air Force during the Korean War and served as a medic in Germany from 1951-1955.
Earl met Dorry at Riverview in Chicago in 1956 and started dating and got married in 1957. They have now been married for 64 years in Sept.
He worked at Stewart Warner in Chicago in the drafting dept. as he was studying to be a engineer, and Dorry worked downtown for Kaiser aluminum as a teletype operator.
Earl always loved working with wood and finally joined the Carpenters Union and became a custom cabinet maker.
Their first daughter Pam was born in 1958 and second daughter, Darlene, in 1962.
In 1962 they bought their first home in Streamwood with a deposit of $5.00 and this is still the current house that they are still living in for 59 years. You can see all of Earl’s carpentry skills with the room addition that he solely built, and there probably isn’t a wall in the house that he hasn’t made a change too.
When they got married Earl was a Lutheran and Dorry was a Catholic and it wasn’t long when Dorry was going to St. John the Evangelist church with the daughters and the oldest daughter said, “Daddy why don’t you come to church with us. Being that his daughter questioned him, he started going to church and at St. John’s was a priest that he knew from St. Ferninands parish in Chicago and Father was so happy to see him in the church. This was still in 1962 and Father took Earl under his wing, and Earl nourished in the church. He went on a Cursillo weekend, got involved in that , Earl started getting more involved at St. John’s and became a usher, they both worked as a Baptism Couple, taught Junior High classes, joined the Knights of Columbus, got involved in Ministers of Care, visiting the sick in hospitals, nursing homes and at home visits. Got involved in all of the side activities at St. John’s with the Country Fair. Helped with a lot of wood projects at St. John’s which are still there today. Got very involved in Marriage Encounter and it wasn’t look before he was asked to be a Deacon in the church with 13 other men and out of the 13, 6 said YES and that was the start of a beautiful time in Earl and Dorry’s life. Earl was ordained at Holy Name Cathedral in 1983 by Cardinal Bernardin. and served as a Permanent Deacon at St. John’s for 31 years, and than retired, mainly because Ahlzheimer’s was beginning.
From 1969 to about 2011 , Earl and Dorry thru almost all the world , saving all year long for their vacations overseas and sometimes even paying their utilities on final notices, but their vacation money always went into savings. All the trips they did were tremendous but some of their extra special trips were going to Rwanda to sit with the mountain gorillas, going to their Natural ancestry countries Earl in Norway, wearing his Father’s shoes and Sweden and Dorry to Poland . Both were extremely moving to go back to your original family homes. Went to Russia, China, Australia, 3 times to Africa , went to Washington DC for the opening and celebration of the Korean War monument and the first time, hearing President Clinton talking and the 3rd time with Barack Obama and the countries go on.
Earl loved his country and was so proud to have served during the Korean War and went to as many memorial activities that he could. Got involved in the VFW for some time.
They loved camping and nature and especially animals their whole life. Had a trailer at First Lake Beach in Volo for 13 years. Had about 12 dogs during the years and now have 3 dogs and 2 cats but in passing years, had a capuchin monkey for 8 years, a descented skunk, a raccoon, several white geese and about 65 different birds. Their pride and joy though, was Harry who was a mynah bird and had quite a vocabulary. He once told Earl to shut up because he was talking too much and those of you who knew Earl, never knew him to talk too much.
Earl was very involved in Aquarium clubs and won several awards at Lord’s Park Aquarium club
in Elgin.
After he retired from Contempo design where he did work at Mill Rose theatre which was in Niles, and a lot of convention halls.
After he retired when he was 65 , joined many classes at Roosevelt University in Schaumburg.
Loved going to the Air and Water shows in Chicago with his daughters and absolutely loved the Blue Angels, which he was so proud of.
Earl and Dorry both loved Elder hostel classes and Earl’s favorite was the space program in AZ.and actually flew on ground in a space capsule. Got to almost all the training that a real astronaut experiences with airlessness. The class built a small rocket , rode in simulation.
But being that he was such a stalwart WHITE SOX FAN , went to AZ. For the White Sox training schedules. Even during his Ahlzheimer times, you could never down the Sox as he always had a comeback for you. They almost ended their romantic days when Earl had the nerve to take Dorry to a Sox game and she kept rooting for the Cubs and the worst part was, the Sox lost and than she really gave it to him. He used to call her every night but after that date, she didn’t hear from for two weeks.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Cherished Place in West Dundee, IL. This was the adult day care center that Earl attended for many years and he enjoyed it immensely. The staff cared for him and made his days so enjoyable.
