Obituary for Joseph Nugent

Joseph Michael "Mike" Nugent born on 9/3/1935 and passed away peacefully, at home, on 5/19/2021, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Elsie, nee Dunphy; loving father of Deborah (Veo) Campbell, Steven (Mary), Catherine Crowell, Victoria (Mike) Rundquist, Joseph, Patricia (Michael) Vacura and Julie (Greg) Mayer; grandfather of 16 and great grandfather of 19; brother of George Chiaro; preceded in death by his parents Joseph Leon and Ruth, nee Hawkins, brother David and sister Nancy Eliopoulos, granddaughter Angela Rundquist Travelino and great grandson Nicholas Travelino.

Born in Chicago and raised on the South side, he moved to the North side of Chicago where he met his wife, Elsie and married on 5/19/1956. He attended Fenger and graduated from Lane Tech High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a resident of Streamwood for 40 years where he served on the Volunteer Fire Dept. for 10 years and he was a deacon (ordained in 1983) for 35 years. He and Elsie were active members of St. John the Evangelist Church and were part of the "tent" people. He was a dedicated employee of AT&T for 33 years. Upon retirement he worked part time at the Countryside Funeral Home for 5 years as a hearse and limousine driver. He loved to listen to good jazz and classical music and was an excellent writer and story teller. He enjoyed watching PBS and old movies. He and Elsie moved to Port Orange, Florida to get away from the cold and they lived in Florida year round for 13 years. They returned to Schaumburg to be near children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visitation Sunday 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory 1640 S. Greenmeadows Blvd. (at Barrington Rd.) Streamwood. Funeral Monday beginning with 9:30 am prayers to St John the Evangelist Church. Mass 10:30 am. Interment St. Michael the Archangel.
