Obituary for Josephine Domaracki

Josephine E. Domaracki
August 27, 1920 - February 13, 2022

Josephine “Jo” Emily Domaracki (nee Egan) passed away peacefully on February 13, 2022 at the age of 101. She was born on August 27, 1920 to James and Mary Egan and had three sisters (Agnes, Corrine and Irene) and four brothers (James, Allen, Charles and Clarence). She married John F. Domaracki on August 2, 1941 at Saint Columbkille in Chicago. Josephine is survived by her two sons, Martin Domaracki (Judith) and Edmund Domaracki, Sr. (Rose Ann). “Grandma Jo” was the proud grandma of Suzanne Domaracki (Michael O’Phelan), Edmund Domaracki, Jr. (Mary Ann), Joleen Haran (Kevin) and Kristine Marsh (Kenneth), a loving “GG” to eight great-grandchildren and a caring aunt to several nieces and nephews.

Before getting married and at the start of World War II, Jo worked at a defense plant where she ran a drill press and assembly line (the plant made radio parts for Motorola and those parts were later converted to ammunition during war-time). After marrying, she went to work for another defense plant where she worked on a master-rod as a parts shaper and polisher (the plant made parts for Studebaker cars but later made parts for planes during war-time). Jo always had a strong work ethic and frequently joked that she would not know what to do without her work. She loved to share stories of her days working as a cocktail waitress in Chicago at the original jazz and supper club - The London House, where she was known as “Little Jo” and at the jazz and comedy club - Mister Kelly’s on Rush. She later retired (not once but twice!) from St. Mary’s hospital in Chicago. After retirement, Jo moved to the suburbs and decided to take a job at Target where she worked until she was 90 years old. During this time, she also loved babysitting some of her great-grandchildren. Her great-grandchildren treasured the time spent playing with “GG” and will always remember her for her hot cereal with sprinkles, ice cream (including Jo’s own love for ice cream) and warm towels.

Besides spending time with her great-grandchildren, Jo loved to travel. One of Jo’s favorite places to visit was Door County (Sturgeon Bay) with family. Jo also loved getting dressed up to go out, building puzzles and had a knack for decorating and baking. Christmas will always be remembered with gifts adorned in beautiful bows and amazing trays and trays of cookies - she was known by many for her amazing Kolachky cookies!

Memorial Mass Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 12 noon at St. Celestine’s Parish in Elmwood Park (3020 N. 76th Court, Elmwood Park) with inurnment to follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in River Grove.
