Obituary for Michael Herman

Michael Herman wanted to thank all those who walked life’s journey with him these past 70 years. That journey ended on July 11th allowing him to join his heavenly father, giving thanks for a lifetime of blessings. Born in Chicago in 1950, he now joins his parents, William and Frances Herman in eternal life.

Michael often acknowledged his many blessings, taking for granted the efforts of the priests, nuns and teachers at St. Walter’s grade school in Roselle in molding his early years. He called graduating from Lake Park High School in 1968 a miracle due to his preference for sports over textbooks. However, his mathematical skills would serve him well as he loved to calculate horse racing odds.

Michael developed his love of horse racing early in life with his brothers Bill Herman and Ken Herman, guided by their father. Watching as Arlington Park burned to the ground, only to rise again, allowed him to continue to follow his passion. Working nights permitted him time during the day for the race track and his many friends there.

Unlike his brother, Steve Herman (Marta), Michael had no home improvement skills, once making 23 holes in the wall to hang a curtain rod.

He found joy in the many family gatherings hosted over the years by his sisters Norma Jean Young and Barb Harper (Bill). He enjoyed being an uncle to numerous nieces and nephews who tested his memory of all their names. He shared a special bond with his five nieces and nephews in Atlanta, who loved him like a father.

Another of life’s blessings allowed him to complete 37 years as a clerk at the Schaumburg Post Office, becoming a Union Steward in 1982. He was named Chief Union Steward in 1992. Michael remained active as State Business Agent from 2013 through this year. During those years he was mentored by so many wonderful people within USPS local 4871 as well as at the state and national level.

But Mike would say that his greatest blessing was sharing 44 years of marriage with his loving wife, Kathy (Butz) Herman. Through her, he rediscovered his commitment to a good and gracious God. Together they fought the battle of pancreatic cancer with the help of a wonderful team of doctors, nurses and caregivers.

It is for those reasons that he asks in lieu of flowers, that you place $2 in the collection plate of your local church or charity. It will be the best bet you ever place.

Visitation on Friday, July 24, from 4:00pm – 8:00pm at Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory, 1640 Greenmeadows Blvd, (at Barrington Road) Streamwood/Schaumburg. On Saturday July 25, prayers will be held at the funeral home at 11:00am followed by procession to St. Marcelline Catholic Church in Schaumburg, for a memorial Mass 11:45am. Interment at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery in Palatine, IL.
