Susan Ann Spooner (nee Goodwin), 80, of Streamwood died May 18, 2022. Susan was the beloved wife of Dan Spooner for 58 years; loving mother of Becky Corwin and Amy Spooner; caring mother-in-law of Michael Corwin and David Ellis; and proud grandmother of Teddy, Harry, and Isla. Susan was also cherished by many additional family members and friends.
Born to be a teacher, Susan earned her degree in education at Southern Illinois University, where she met Dan. After staying home to raise their daughters, Susan worked as an elementary educator in U-46 for 22 years, first at Woodland Heights Elementary and then Bartlett Elementary. Susan was passionate about volunteering in the community, serving over 30 years as a board member and board president of Poplar Creek Library and numerous years as president of the PTA and as a Girl Scout leader. Susan lived in her Streamwood home for over 54 years.
Susan grew up in the Wrigleyville neighborhood of Chicago with her extended family within walking distance. Confident and independent from a young age, Susan started riding the streetcar alone at age five. A natural leader with a compassionate heart, Susan began helping her older relatives from a young age, taking her grandmother to doctor appointments, and handling other important matters for loved ones. This helpful spirit characterized her throughout her life, and she continued to provide wise counsel and encouragement to family and friends until the end of her life.
Susan laughed easily and maintained a positive outlook in all circumstances, while still being highly pragmatic. She loved visiting national parks – Yellowstone was her favorite – and taking extensive road trips with her family. Susan also enjoyed reading, birds, quirky humor, snowmen, and nearly anything with a smiley face on it. She appreciated folk art and collected small cast iron figurines, as well as funny stuffed animals that sing and dance. In good times and bad, Susan always knew just what to say to make you think and to make you feel better.
A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, June 25th, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at Countryside Funeral Home 1640 Green Meadows Blvd. Streamwood/Schaumburg. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Heifer International, or your favorite charity would be appreciated.
