Obituary for Jo Simmons

Jo Ann Watson Simmons, 81, of Bartlett died June 8, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. She was born on November 13, 1935 in Penn Yann, New York to Marguerite and William Watson Sr. but grew up in Johnston, South Carolina. Jo Ann was the beloved wife of the late Luther (Luke) Lee Simmons Jr.; loving mother of LeeAnn, Luke (E.K.), Donna, and Scott (Anne); proud grandmother of Darrell, Brian, Lizzy, Kathryn, Ben, Becca, Eva, Blake, Ryan, Griffin and Maddie; great grandmother of Luna, Braydon, Ashley, Ben, and Morgan; and fond sister of Billy (Sandra) and Doc (Marci).

Jo Ann and Luke began their family in Athens, Georgia and over the years lived in Albany GA, Jacksonville FL, Charleston WV, Greensboro NC, and Palos Verdes CA before settling in Bartlett in 1977. Jo Ann was an avid reader and following that passion she worked at the Bartlett Public Library in a variety of roles for over two decades, ultimately becoming the assistant to the library director before retiring. Regardless of where their travels took them, mom always took the time to visit the local public library while dad waited patiently.

In addition to reading, her other interests included crocheting, crossword puzzles, and sewing. Before her illness slowed her down, she covered many miles walking the streets of Bartlett on an almost daily basis. Jo Ann had a lifelong love of the beach, from dancing at Myrtle Beach as a young woman to the visits she and Luke made to the North Carolina Outer Banks later in life. One of our family’s most memorable vacations was the family reunion at Sunset Beach, NC. It was during this trip Jo Ann got her grandmother name, Nana.

There will be a memorial service in honor of her life on Thursday, June 15 from 10:00 a.m. until 12Noon at Countryside Funeral Home, 950 South Bartlett Road (at Stearns Road) Bartlett. Cremation was private at Countryside Crematory. In lieu of flowers donations to American Cancer Society www.cancer.org or the American Heart Association www.heart.org would be appreciated.

A private burial at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Albany, Georgia will be held at a later date.
