Condolences

Condolence From: Nicholas Rich
Condolence: It might be easy for me to say, since I have only the faintest understanding of the depths of your feelings. But in trying to grapple with grief, I think the best way forward is to hold on to everything Matt meant, and to celebrate the brightness in the life he lived, even when it hurts. Maybe especially then. I've spent the majority of my life struggling to find courage - to say yes to new experiences, to take chances or seize opportunities, to find joy in good things both big and small, to face my flaws and become a better person. But in the short amount of time that I shared with Matt, I saw someone who, even in the darkest of times radiated a courage he wore as naturally as his collection of super cute pop culture shirts, and his beany. In the time I knew him, Matt's cancer was always a part of his life, but he never let it be the defining part. His passion - for video production, for all things nerdy, for puppers and other cute critters - was something he was able to harness, and gave him an inexhaustible sense of drive that led to some insanely cool experiences, some of which I was lucky enough to join in on. He knew, more than anyone his age deserved to know, how difficult it can be to even get out of bed. But he never let that stop him. He faced not only his illness, but also the challenges presented by day to day life with a grace that I can only envy. He had the heart of a lion. Or, more appropriately, a corgi dressed adorably in a lion's mane. Like the rest of the Elias family, Matt was a giant, if not in height, at least in his presence. The sheer amount of lives he touched with his kindness and easy, uncynical humor is testament to that. In the overwhelming pain of his absence, I hope that you find comfort in each other, and the strength of your bonds. But more than that, I hope you find comfort in his legacy. In the memories you shared, the things he collected, and the work he produced. In the love he had for you, and the love you will always carry for him. I also hope that we can follow his example. To bravely chase the things that matter to us. To surround ourselves with the people and things we love. To pet cute dogs whenever possible. To embrace new experiences, even if they're difficult and uncomfortable. To find a way to smile, even in the face of something painful and scary. Because I think that's what Matt would want.

Condolence: To The Elias Family, I am very sorry for your loss. Matt was a special young man. He was one who was so passionate for the things he loved. His presence in the classroom encouraged and motivated fellow students to do great things with their projects. He was a great student, colleague, and friend. He will be missed dearly. God bless.

Condolence: I came to know Matthew only via stories from his very proud dad (which included introductions to what Ingrid and Peter were up to too). It was very apparent that this is a loving family. I am so sorry that your son has passed. I know he will be missed. Gratefully, you will always be blessed with knowing him and holding him in your heart. My sympathies are with you in this time of sorrow. God bless.

Condolence: Matt came to Toonami as a part of Make-A-Wish. His visit with us was a blast and quite honestly a memory I will always cherish. When we make Toonami, we make it to inspire people and entertain them, and the fact that Matt chose US to spend time with blows me away and still touches me to this day. He was a bright, funny, talented young man and it was an honor to know him, and be in his documentary. Matt, thank you for what you gave us. None of us at Toonami will ever forget it.

Condolence: Leslie, Aarne and family, I can not imagine the pain of losing someone so bright and charming like Matt. He was such a kind and passionate individual. I was lucky to meet him in person and even get to work with him on a student documentary. He was such a talented director, knowing exactly what he wanted to film, being prepared to work on-set, and when I saw the final product, I could tell how passionate he was to edit the piece. We spoke a lot about working in the industry and he was so sharp and ready to work that I was always looking forward to see what he would come out with next. I will cherish those memories forever. I am so sorry for your loss.

Condolence: Matt came for a visit to our office as part of Make a Wish. I was so moved by his passion for anime and his desire to become an editor. He came back a couple of years later to interview us for a school project; we were all so happy to see him again! His strong spirit will remain with me and our team. My thoughts are with his family now and in the future.
